Local Paper Optimism - Let's hope it's a good omen!

I called into bargain Box for my Guardian yesterday and was shocked and a little surprised to see a poster at the door with RYE'S NEW COMMUNITY RADIO STATION emblazoned in three inch high letters! Nice of them to circumvent the OFCOM licence application process.

I had a nice email from Max Davenport with suggestions for a dance music show. I'm all for it but we've got to do some serious research into music before we do the application. It's very difficult to please everybody and if you try it with a "scatter-gun" of individual specialist music shows it'll lead to lots of people tuning out.

No, the music format will be a tough nit to crack and I would welcome any input at this stage.

I was incredibly pleased when i read about Rye FM in the observer. I hope i'll be able to pick it up in Sedlescombe??

Dance sounds like a great idea, maybe during the evenings?

To the blog writer, Since when was Dance music a specialist music group? Its as much in everyday life as is any other type of music!
Its not like you'll be playing Bag pipe music from 1967, dance is in our culture as much as any other type of music, be it Rock or Pop!
I fear much like the town itself the station could be similar and based upon the old. Rather than being cutting edge and willing to take risks!

Well,it depends on what you call old! I'm 47 this year but I spend most of my time listening to underground dance and ambient groove music while most of my contemporaries listen to music of the 1980s.

Realistically the station has to appeal to a wide audience otherwise there's no point in it being there; we might as well make cassettes and pass them around among ourselves. I described dance music as specialist because, in radio terms, it is. The mainstream is pop/R&B whilst proper dance music is in a different league.

The whole point of this blog and the discussion group at http://www.hostingphpbb.com/forum/ryefm.html
is to encourage debate as to what we should be playing and I'd encourage you to post there where your comments will be more widely accessible.

Unfortunately the reality is that 20% of the people in Rye and the Rye Hinterland are aged between 5 and 24, 25% are aged between 25 and 34 and the rest are under 5 or over 34 so. to appeal to a wide audience, you have to appeal to them.

There are ways of doing this without being "based on the old" as you put it and I for one am keen to do this because I also see the town ageing and the youth being marginalised.

I agree, music will be a tough nut to crack. And i personally think that on a friday night / weekend evening the youth culture would tune in and benefit from a youth show. WIth new up and coming bands, DJ's, events etc. Im 24 and I would listen to it!

In the current programme plan I have all of Friday evening/night from 8pm to 1am slated as the Friday Night Dance and Urban Zone. This I envisage as a mix of all dance and urban styles either in virtual programmes of one or two hours or as a massive mashup!
